Voriconazole
Full Form of VCZ
What is VCZ?
Voriconazole, commonly abbreviated as VCZ in clinical and pharmaceutical contexts, is a broad-spectrum triazole antifungal medication used to treat serious and invasive fungal infections. It works by inhibiting the synthesis of ergosterol, a critical component of fungal cell membranes, thereby stopping the growth of pathogenic fungi. In India, VCZ is widely prescribed by infectious disease specialists, pulmonologists, and intensivists for managing conditions such as invasive aspergillosis, candidiasis, and other fungal infections that are resistant to first-line antifungins. The drug is particularly important in tertiary care hospitals, where patients with compromised immunity, including those undergoing chemotherapy, organ transplant recipients, and ICU patients on prolonged mechanical ventilation, are at heightened risk of opportunistic fungal infections. Voriconazole is available in both oral and intravenous formulations, and therapeutic drug monitoring is often recommended to ensure optimal dosing. For Indian medical students preparing for NEET-PG, USMLE, or NMC examinations, understanding VCZ is essential, as questions on antifungal pharmacology frequently appear in these competitive medical entrance tests.
