Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail
Full Form of VBM
What is VBM?
The Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail, often referred to in shortened discussions as VBM, is an independent verification system attached to Electronic Voting Machines used during elections in India. It enables a voter to physically confirm that the vote has indeed been cast for the candidate of their choice by generating a paper slip bearing the symbol and name of the selected candidate, which is briefly visible through a transparent window before being dropped into a sealed compartment. Introduced by the Election Commission of India to strengthen public trust in the electronic voting process, it was first deployed during a 2013 bye-election in the Noksen assembly constituency of Nagaland and has since become a permanent feature of all Lok Sabha and Vidhan Sabha elections across the country. The system provides a paper-based record that can be physically audited in case of disputes, offering an additional layer of transparency. For Indian students preparing for UPSC, SSC, banking, and other competitive examinations, VVPAT remains an important topic that frequently appears in the polity and general awareness sections of question papers.
