Vector-Borne Diseases
Full Form of VBD
What is VBD?
Vector-Borne Diseases, commonly abbreviated as VBD, refer to illnesses transmitted to humans through the bite of infected vectors such as mosquitoes, ticks, sandflies, fleas, and triatomine bugs. In India, the major VBDs include malaria, dengue, chikungunya, lymphatic filariasis, kala-azar (visceral leishmaniasis), and Japanese encephalitis, all of which pose serious public health challenges. The government addresses these diseases through the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme (NVBDCP) under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, which coordinates prevention, surveillance, and treatment efforts across states. India has set ambitious targets for eliminating malaria and kala-azar, with states like Odisha, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and the northeastern region receiving focused attention due to higher transmission rates. Urban areas also witness seasonal dengue outbreaks during and after the monsoon. For competitive exams, VBD is a recurring topic in UPSC, NEET, and state public service commission papers, especially under epidemiology, national health programmes, and preventive medicine sections.
