Variable Air Volume
Full Form of VAV
What is VAV?
Variable Air Volume (VAV) is an advanced HVAC technology widely used in commercial and institutional buildings across India. Unlike traditional constant air volume systems, VAV systems adjust the quantity of air supplied to different zones based on the cooling or heating demand of each area, providing significant energy savings and improved occupant comfort. In India, VAV systems have become increasingly popular in modern office complexes, shopping malls, airports, hospitals, and IT parks, particularly in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Hyderabad where strict energy efficiency standards are being enforced under ECBC guidelines. The system uses variable frequency drives, motorized dampers, and zone thermostats to modulate airflow, reducing energy consumption by 20 to 40 percent compared to conventional setups. Building managers and MEP engineers across India frequently specify VAV boxes for their flexibility and cost-effectiveness. The concept is also covered extensively in mechanical engineering curricula at IITs and NITs, making it a relevant topic for students preparing for competitive exams like GATE, SSC JE, and RRB JE.
