Air Handling Unit
Full Form of AHU
What is AHU?
An Air Handling Unit (AHU) is a key component of HVAC systems used to regulate and circulate air as part of a building's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning infrastructure. In India, AHUs are widely deployed in commercial buildings, hospitals, shopping malls, IT parks, and industrial facilities to maintain indoor air quality and thermal comfort. The unit typically consists of a fan, heating and cooling coils, filters, dampers, and sound attenuators. AHUs condition the air by drawing in fresh or return air, filtering it, adjusting temperature and humidity, and then distributing it through ductwork. They can be roof-mounted or installed inside mechanical rooms. In the Indian context, AHUs are critical for managing pollution and dust, especially in metropolitan regions with high particulate matter. The use of AHUs ensures compliance with standards like ASHRAE and NBC. For students preparing for HVAC or mechanical engineering exams, understanding AHU components, types (such as packaged vs. modular), and air handling principles is essential. Proper AHU selection impacts energy efficiency and operational costs.
