Vehicle Assembly Building
Full Form of VAB
What is VAB?
The Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) is a massive, climate-controlled facility where rockets and launch vehicles are integrated and assembled before being moved to the launch pad. In India, the VAB is located at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, and is operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It serves as the central hub where various stages of launch vehicles like PSLV, GSLV, and LVM3 are carefully stacked, tested, and prepared for upcoming missions. Skilled engineers and technicians work inside the building over several days to mate the rocket stages, integrate scientific payloads and satellites, and conduct exhaustive final checks before the fully assembled vehicle is rolled out to the launch complex. The facility plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, precision, and reliability of India's satellite, lunar, and interplanetary missions. It supports both national and commercial launches carried out by ISRO. For students preparing for ISRO technical exams, DRDO entry tests, UPSC, or science Olympiads, understanding the VAB and the broader launch infrastructure is frequently tested in general awareness and technical sections.
