Urban Zonal Office
Full Form of UZO
What is UZO?
Urban Zonal Office, commonly abbreviated as UZO, refers to a decentralized administrative unit set up by municipal corporations and urban local bodies in Indian cities to manage civic services at the zonal level. Large metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru are typically divided into multiple zones, each headed by a Zonal Officer or Assistant Commissioner who reports to the Municipal Commissioner. The UZO handles functions such as property tax collection, birth and death registrations, issuing trade licences, building permissions, sanitation drives, and grievance redressal for residents within its jurisdiction. The concept of zonal administration was strengthened after the 74th Constitutional Amendment, which empowered urban local bodies to deliver services more efficiently through area-level offices. For competitive exam aspirants, UZO appears in questions related to urban governance, the structure of municipal corporations, and the functioning of local self-government in India.
