Municipal Corporation of Delhi
Full Form of MCD
What is MCD?
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is the principal civic body responsible for governing the National Capital Territory of Delhi in India. Established under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act of 1957, it manages essential urban services such as waste management, road maintenance, public health, sanitation, water supply, and primary education within its jurisdiction. Over time, the MCD was trifurcated in 2012 into three separate corporations—North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC), and East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC)—to improve administrative efficiency. However, in 2022, these were reunified into a single MCD again. The term 'MCD' is widely used in official documents, government notifications, and daily news in Delhi. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and Delhi government job tests, understanding the structure and functions of MCD is important as it features in questions on local governance and urban administration. The MCD plays a pivotal role in the day-to-day life of Delhi’s residents, overseeing everything from streetlights to public schools.
