Urinary Urge Incontinence
Full Form of UUI
What is UUI?
Urinary Urge Incontinence, commonly abbreviated as UUI, is a medical condition characterized by a sudden, intense urge to urinate followed by involuntary leakage of urine before reaching the toilet. It is one of the most common forms of urinary incontinence, particularly affecting older adults, postmenopausal women, and patients with neurological disorders such as stroke, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson's disease. In India, UUI remains significantly underreported due to social stigma, cultural taboos, and lack of awareness, though clinical studies suggest a notable prevalence among women above 40 years and within the growing geriatric population. The condition is routinely discussed in urology and gynaecology OPDs across government hospitals, AIIMS centres, and private clinics, and is managed through bladder training, pelvic floor exercises, fluid management, and antimuscarinic medications such as oxybutynin and tolterodine. UUI is an important topic in postgraduate medical entrance examinations including NEET PG, INI-CET, and FMGE, where candidates are tested on its pathophysiology, urodynamic diagnosis, and pharmacological management. Early recognition and timely treatment can substantially improve the quality of life of affected patients.
