Unique Transaction Reference
Full Form of UTR
What is UTR?
Unique Transaction Reference (UTR) is a unique alphanumeric code assigned by banks in India to identify and track every individual financial transaction processed through electronic payment systems. It is generated automatically when money is transferred through NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, or UPI-based transactions and serves as a digital fingerprint for each payment. In the Indian banking ecosystem, the UTR plays a critical role in helping customers, merchants, and banks trace, verify, and resolve transaction-related queries, especially when payments fail or remain pending. Banks such as SBI, HDFC, and ICICI prominently display the UTR on transaction receipts, and it is also visible in SMS alerts and mobile banking applications. The Reserve Bank of India mandates the use of UTR numbers for all electronic fund transfers, making it an essential element of financial transparency and audit trails. For competitive exams like IBPS PO, SBI Clerk, and RBI Grade B, understanding payment system terminology including UTR, IFSC, and MMID is frequently tested in the banking awareness section.
