Unstructured Supplementary Service Data
Full Form of USSD
What is USSD?
Unstructured Supplementary Service Data, commonly known as USSD, is a communication protocol used in GSM mobile networks that allows users to send short text-based commands directly from their mobile phones to service providers. Unlike SMS, USSD sessions are real-time and do not store messages on either the phone or the network, which makes transactions faster, cheaper, and more efficient. In India, USSD became widely popular through the *99# service launched by the National Payments Corporation of India in 2014, which enabled feature phone users without internet access to perform basic banking services such as balance enquiry, fund transfer, and mini statement. It played a significant role in promoting financial inclusion under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana by reaching rural and unbanked populations across the country. Telecom operators also use USSD codes for balance checks, recharge, and value-added service activation. The protocol remains a relevant topic in Indian competitive examinations, particularly in banking awareness, telecommunications, and information technology sections.
