Universal Serial Bus
Full Form of USB
What is USB?
Universal Serial Bus, commonly known as USB, is an industry standard that establishes specifications for cables, connectors, and protocols for connection, communication, and power supply between computers and peripheral devices. In India, USB has become ubiquitous, found in every smartphone charger, laptop, pen drive, and even modern televisions. Introduced in the mid-1990s, it replaced a multitude of older connectors by offering a single, user-friendly interface that supports plug-and-play functionality and hot-swapping. USB's role in India extends from simple data transfer between devices to charging billions of mobile phones daily, making it a backbone of digital connectivity. The technology has evolved through several generations, from USB 1.0 to the current USB4, with notable versions like USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 greatly improving speed and power delivery. The latest USB Type-C connector, now mandated for many devices in India, is reversible and supports faster charging and high-definition video output. USB is used everywhere—homes, offices, banks, government kiosks, and educational institutions—for connecting keyboards, mice, printers, external hard drives, and biometric devices like Aadhaar-enabled fingerprint scanners. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, or banking tests, USB-related concepts such as interface types, data transfer rates, and power delivery standards may appear in the computer awareness section.
