Urea Reduction Ratio
Full Form of URR
What is URR?
URR stands for Urea Reduction Ratio, a critical medical measurement used to evaluate the effectiveness of haemodialysis treatment in patients suffering from end-stage kidney disease or chronic kidney failure. The ratio is calculated by comparing the level of urea nitrogen in the blood before and after a dialysis session, and the result is expressed as a percentage. A URR value of 65 percent or higher is generally accepted as an indicator of adequate dialysis, meaning the treatment has successfully removed sufficient waste products from the bloodstream. In India, where chronic kidney disease cases are steadily rising due to diabetes, hypertension, and changing lifestyle patterns, URR is widely monitored by nephrologists across both government and private dialysis centres. The Indian Council of Medical Research and the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation routinely emphasise quality dialysis parameters including URR. This concept frequently appears in NEET PG and AIIMS entrance examinations under the nephrology section.
