Unit Run Canteen
Full Form of URC
What is URC?
A Unit Run Canteen, commonly known as URC, is a retail outlet operated by individual units of the Indian Armed Forces to provide essential goods and household items to serving military personnel, veterans, and their families at concessional rates. These canteens are managed at the unit level under the broader administrative framework of the Canteen Stores Department, which is the centralised body responsible for procuring and supplying goods to all military units across the country. URCs play a meaningful role in boosting the morale and welfare of defence personnel by making groceries, electronics, clothing, and daily-use products available at prices significantly lower than the open market, owing to tax exemptions granted by the government. Typically located within or near military cantonments, regimental centres, and naval or air force bases, URCs serve lakhs of armed forces families every month. The concept ensures that troops posted in remote border areas can access quality products without depending on distant civilian markets. URCs frequently appear in questions related to defence welfare schemes in competitive examinations like UPSC CDS, NDA, and AFCAT, making the term useful for aspirants preparing for armed forces entry tests.
