Unified Quick Response

What is UQR?

The Unified Quick Response (UQR) code is a standardized digital payment feature widely used across India's rapidly growing cashless economy. It functions as a single interoperable QR code that allows users to send and receive money through any participating payment application without needing to know the specific platform the recipient prefers. The system was developed under the guidance of the National Payments Corporation of India to simplify both merchant and peer-to-peer transactions throughout the country. UQR codes can be scanned using popular apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, and various bank-specific UPI applications, making them extremely versatile at retail outlets, street vendors, restaurants, and online platforms. Since its rollout, UQR has played a meaningful role in promoting financial inclusion by enabling small merchants in rural and semi-urban regions to accept digital payments without investing in expensive point-of-sale machines. The Reserve Bank of India and NPCI have actively encouraged widespread adoption of UQR to reduce cash dependency. For students preparing for banking, finance, or government competitive examinations, understanding UQR and related payment infrastructure like UPI, BHIM, and IMPS is essential as these topics frequently appear in current affairs and general awareness sections.
