Quick Response
Full Form of QR
What is QR?
The acronym QR stands for Quick Response, referring to a two-dimensional barcode that can be read by a smartphone camera or dedicated scanner. Originally developed in Japan for tracking automotive parts, QR codes have become ubiquitous in India, particularly after the demonetisation drive and the rapid adoption of digital payments. A QR code stores information such as URLs, text, or payment addresses in a pattern of black squares on a white background. In India, the most common application is in UPI-based transactions through apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, and BHIM, where merchants display a QR code that customers scan to make instant payments without sharing bank details. Beyond payments, QR codes are used for railway and movie ticket booking, product authentication, sharing Wi-Fi passwords, and accessing government welfare schemes. The technology gained massive traction during the COVID-19 pandemic for contactless menus and check-ins. Its simplicity, low cost, and ease of use have made it a vital tool in India’s digital infrastructure push. For competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and banking, understanding QR technology is relevant in topics on digital India, fintech innovations, and cybersecurity, where questions on UPI and cashless economy often appear.
