Ureteropelvic Junction
Full Form of UPJ
What is UPJ?
UPJ stands for Ureteropelvic Junction, which is the anatomical point in the human body where the renal pelvis of the kidney joins the ureter. This junction plays a critical role in the urinary system by allowing urine to drain smoothly from the kidney down to the bladder. When this junction becomes narrow or blocked, a condition known as UPJ obstruction arises, which can lead to hydronephrosis, kidney swelling, flank pain, recurrent urinary tract infections, and eventual loss of renal function if left untreated. In India, UPJ is a frequently used term in urology departments of major hospitals, including AIIMS New Delhi, PGIMER Chandigarh, SGPGI Lucknow, and various medical colleges where laparoscopic and robotic pyeloplasty procedures are routinely performed with good success rates. The acronym appears widely in radiology reports, surgical case sheets, discharge summaries, and clinical discussions among nephrologists, urologists, and paediatric surgeons. Medical students preparing for NEET PG, AIIMS PG, INI-CET, and FMGE exams often encounter questions on UPJ anatomy, embryology, clinical presentation, and related surgical corrections. The term is also commonly seen in standard textbooks of general surgery and urology prescribed in Indian MBBS, MS, and MCh curricula, making it essential terminology for healthcare professionals and postgraduate trainees across the country.
