Upper Outer Quadrant
Full Form of UOQ
What is UOQ?
Upper Outer Quadrant, commonly abbreviated as UOQ, is a medical anatomical term used to describe one of the four quadrants of the breast. The breast is divided into four regions for clinical examination and reporting purposes: the upper outer quadrant, upper inner quadrant, lower outer quadrant, and lower inner quadrant. The UOQ refers to the area extending from the nipple towards the armpit, including the axillary tail of Spence. In Indian medical practice, this term holds significant importance as approximately 50 percent of breast cancers are detected in the upper outer quadrant due to the higher density of glandular tissue in this region. Medical students across India's MBBS, MS, and superspecialty courses frequently encounter this term during their surgery, obstetrics, and pathology studies. Clinical examinations, mammography reports, and breast self-examination guidelines routinely reference quadrants to localize findings. The UOQ is also relevant during procedures like fine needle aspiration cytology, biopsies, and surgical excisions. For competitive exams including NEET-PG, AIIMS, and PGI entrance tests, candidates must know quadrant-wise distribution of breast pathologies, making UOQ a frequently tested concept. Nursing students and general practitioners also use this terminology when documenting clinical findings.
