What is UIQ?

UIQ stands for User Interface Quartz, a software platform originally developed by Ericsson and later maintained by UIQ Technology, a joint venture between Sony Ericsson and Motorola. Built on top of the Symbian operating system, UIQ served as the graphical user interface layer for touchscreen smartphones during the mid-2000s. In India, UIQ gained notable popularity through Sony Ericsson handsets such as the P1i, G900, and Satio, which were among the early touchscreen devices available in the Indian market before Android and iOS took over the mobile landscape. The interface supported stylus-based input, handwriting recognition, and multitasking features that appealed particularly to business users in metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Delhi, and Bangalore.
