Unidentified Luminous Object
Full Form of ULO
What is ULO?
An Unidentified Luminous Object, commonly abbreviated as ULO, refers to any glowing or light-emitting phenomenon observed in the sky or on the ground whose exact nature cannot be immediately identified by the observer. In India, the term gained widespread public attention in 2014 when Indian Army patrols along the Line of Actual Control in Ladakh reported mysterious floating luminous objects, initially described as ULOs before later investigations suggested they were likely Chinese surveillance drones, helium balloons, or luminous lanterns. The phrase was used by defence personnel as a cautious, non-committal label to describe unusual aerial sightings without causing public alarm or geopolitical tension. The Indian Air Force and Army have since maintained protocols to investigate such reports, and the term continues to appear in defence briefings, parliamentary questions, and media reports about unexplained sightings near sensitive border regions. For aspirants preparing for UPSC CDS, NDA, and other defence-related competitive examinations, understanding such terminology is useful for current affairs and general awareness sections.
