Identified Flying Object
Full Form of IFO
What is IFO?
An Identified Flying Object (IFO) is any aerial phenomenon that is initially reported as unknown but later determined to be a mundane object such as an aircraft, drone, weather balloon, satellite, or bird. The term serves as the counterpart to Unidentified Flying Object (UFO), which remains unidentified after investigation. In India, IFOs are commonly discussed in aviation safety contexts, where pilots and air traffic controllers use the term to resolve radar anomalies. The Indian Air Force and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) maintain protocols for reporting and analysing such objects to prevent airspace violations and ensure flight safety. IFOs also feature in astronomical observations, with amateur astronomers often identifying lights as planets, stars, or satellites. While less sensational than UFOs, IFOs play a crucial role in promoting scientific skepticism and debunking myths. In Indian competitive examinations, questions about the UFO-IFO distinction occasionally appear in general science or reasoning sections, testing candidates' familiarity with common acronyms and logical classification. The term is used globally in aviation, meteorology, and ufology circles, gaining particular relevance in India during discussions on air defence and space debris tracking.
