Ultra Light Machine Gun
Full Form of ULM
What is ULM?
The Ultra Light Machine Gun, commonly abbreviated as ULM, is a category of compact automatic firearm designed to provide infantry units with a portable yet effective suppression weapon. In the Indian defence context, the ULM is typically chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO round and weighs significantly less than traditional machine guns, making it ideal for special forces, paratroopers, and high-altitude warfare operations along India's northern frontiers. The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) along with Indian ordnance factories has worked on indigenising this class of weapon to reduce import dependency. ULMs are deployed during counter-insurgency operations in Jammu and Kashmir, the northeastern states, and during border skirmishes. Their lightweight nature allows soldiers to carry additional ammunition without compromising mobility. The weapon features high rates of fire and quick-change barrel systems for sustained engagements. For competitive examinations such as UPSC CDS, NDA, AFCAT, and various state public service commission defence papers, questions on small arms including ULMs frequently appear under the general knowledge and defence awareness sections.
