Upper Krishna Project
Full Form of UKP
What is UKP?
The Upper Krishna Project (UKP) is a large-scale irrigation and hydroelectric venture built across the Krishna River in the state of Karnataka, India. Commissioned in the 1960s, it comprises two major dams — the Narayanpur Dam and the Almatti Dam — along with an extensive network of canals that irrigate vast stretches of drought-prone regions in northern Karnataka, including the districts of Raichur, Bijapur (now Vijayapura), Gulbarga (Kalaburagi), and Yadgir. The project was designed to harness the waters of the Krishna for agriculture, drinking water supply, and power generation, transforming the dry Deccan plateau into a more productive agricultural belt. The UKP also supports fisheries and provides flood control benefits to downstream areas. It remains a topic of inter-state discussion between Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana over water-sharing rights. For aspirants preparing for KAS, KPSC, UPSC, and other competitive examinations, the Upper Krishna Project is an important topic under Indian geography, water resources, and Karnataka state affairs.
