Unique Identification
Full Form of UID
What is UID?
The term UID, or Unique Identification, refers to a distinct identifier assigned to an individual for official purposes. In India, UID is most commonly associated with the Aadhaar project, a 12-digit unique identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). Introduced in 2009, Aadhaar serves as a biometric-based digital identity covering over 1.3 billion residents. It is used for identity verification across government schemes, banking, taxation, mobile connections, and more. The UID ecosystem leverages demographic and biometric data (fingerprints, iris scans) to ensure uniqueness and prevent duplication. In exam contexts, questions on UID often appear in banking, civil services, and general knowledge sections, testing awareness of Aadhaar’s features, legal challenges, and its role in financial inclusion. UID has streamlined subsidy delivery, reduced fraud, and enabled seamless e-KYC. However, privacy concerns led to Supreme Court rulings on data protection. Today, UID is a cornerstone of India’s digital public infrastructure.
