Underground Drainage
Full Form of UGD
What is UGD?
UGD stands for Underground Drainage, a system of buried pipelines and conduits designed to carry sewage, wastewater, and stormwater away from residential, commercial, and industrial areas for treatment and safe disposal. In India, UGD networks form a critical part of urban municipal infrastructure, managed by local bodies such as municipal corporations, town panchayats, and the Public Works Department. The system replaced earlier open drains that posed serious health hazards by becoming breeding grounds for mosquitoes and contaminating drinking water sources. Major Indian cities including Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune have invested heavily in expanding UGD coverage under schemes like the Atal Mission for Reuse and Infrastructure (AMRUT) and the Smart Cities Mission. Smaller towns are also being brought under underground sewerage networks through the SBM 2.0 programme. The term is widely used by civic engineers, urban planners, municipal councillors, and residents associations when discussing issues like blocked sewers, manhole repairs, or new layout approvals. For aspirants preparing for UPSC, SSC, state PSCs, and municipal corporation exams, understanding UGD systems, their components, and related sanitation policies is an important part of the general studies and public administration syllabus.
