Swachh Bharat Mission
Full Form of SBM
What is SBM?
The Swachh Bharat Mission, commonly known as SBM, is one of the most significant cleanliness and sanitation campaigns launched by the Government of India on 2nd October 2014. Spearheaded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this flagship programme aims to eliminate open defecation, improve solid waste management, and promote hygiene across urban and rural India. The mission operates in two phases, with SBM-Gramin focusing on rural sanitation through toilet construction and behavioural change, while SBM-Urban addresses waste management in cities. The campaign has helped construct over 11 crore toilets nationwide, and India achieved Open Defecation Free status in 2019. Schools, panchayats, and local bodies actively participate in awareness drives, making it a people's movement beyond just a government scheme. SBM holds strong relevance for competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state public service commissions, where questions frequently appear about its objectives, phases, and achievements. The mission continues to evolve with newer goals around sustainability, grey water management, and plastic waste reduction.
