Urban Flood Zone
Full Form of UFZ
What is UFZ?
A Urban Flood Zone is a designated geographical area within an Indian city that has been officially identified as highly vulnerable to flooding based on topography, drainage capacity, historical rainfall patterns, and proximity to water bodies. Urban Local Bodies, State Disaster Management Authorities, and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) in cities such as Mumbai, Chennai, Kochi, Guwahati, and Kolkata use flood zone mapping to regulate construction activity, plan evacuation routes, and allocate emergency rescue resources during the monsoon months. These zones are notified under state town planning acts and integrated with the National Disaster Management Plan to streamline early warning systems and rehabilitation efforts. The concept gained significant traction after devastating urban floods struck Chennai in 2015, Kerala in 2018, and North India in 2023, prompting municipal corporations to revise city master plans and incorporate flood-sensitive zoning regulations. A revised flood zone classification can restrict new high-rise construction in low-lying belts, mandate rainwater harvesting, and require developers to obtain clearances from environmental and disaster management authorities before project approval. For aspirants preparing for UPSC Civil Services, state PSC, and municipal corporation examinations, understanding the framework around urban flood zones is essential under syllabi covering disaster management, urban governance, and environmental planning.
