State Disaster Management Authority
Full Form of SDMA
What is SDMA?
The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) is a statutory body established in each Indian state under the Disaster Management Act, 2005. It is responsible for formulating and implementing state-level policies, plans, and guidelines for disaster preparedness, mitigation, response, and recovery. Headed by the Chief Minister, the SDMA coordinates with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) and district-level authorities to ensure a unified approach to managing natural and man-made calamities such as floods, cyclones, earthquakes, and industrial accidents. The SDMA also oversees the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and allocates funds from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) for relief operations. In India, SDMAs play a critical role during annual monsoon floods in states like Assam and Bihar, and during cyclones in coastal regions. For competitive exams like UPSC, State PCS, and others, knowledge of SDMA functions and its relationship with NDMA is often tested in the disaster management section of General Studies. The authority also conducts community awareness programs and mock drills to build resilience at the grassroots level, making it a key pillar of India's disaster governance framework.
