Unaccounted For Water
Full Form of UFW
What is UFW?
Unaccounted For Water (UFW) refers to the volume of water supplied by a municipal distribution system that does not generate revenue because it is lost through leaks, theft, illegal connections, metering errors, or administrative inefficiencies. In India, UFW is a critical metric used by water utility boards, the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO), and the Jal Jeevan Mission to evaluate the performance of urban water supply networks. Major Indian cities often report UFW levels between 30% and 50%, with some municipalities losing even more due to aging pipelines, unauthorized tapping, and poor maintenance. The Bureau of Indian Standards and state-level Jal Boards use UFW data to plan infrastructure upgrades, pipe replacement drives, and 24x7 water supply schemes. Reducing UFW is central to India's water conservation goals and is frequently discussed in smart city projects. For aspirants of UPSC, GATE Civil Engineering, SSC JE, and state PSCs, understanding UFW calculations, non-revenue water concepts, and NRW reduction strategies is important as questions regularly appear in engineering, public administration, and general studies papers.
