Jal Jeevan Mission
Full Form of JJM
What is JJM?
Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) is a flagship program of the Government of India launched in 2019 under the Ministry of Jal Shakti. Its primary objective is to provide every rural household in India with a functional tap water connection by 2024. JJM aims to ensure safe and adequate drinking water on a regular and long-term basis, improving the quality of life in rural areas. The mission focuses on community participation, water source sustainability, and greywater management. It replaced the earlier National Rural Drinking Water Programme (NRDWP) and adopts a decentralized, demand-driven approach. States and Union Territories implement JJM with central funding, prioritizing water-scarce and quality-affected habitations. The scheme is particularly relevant for aspirants of competitive exams like UPSC, SSC, and state civil services, as questions often cover its objectives, funding pattern, and impact on rural development.
