University Education Commission
Full Form of UEC
What is UEC?
The University Education Commission, commonly known as UEC, refers to a landmark policy body established in India to review and recommend reforms in higher education. The most famous UEC was constituted in 1948 under the chairmanship of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, one of India's most respected philosophers and later the second President of the country. It was tasked with examining the entire structure of university education in newly independent India and suggesting improvements aligned with national needs, democratic values, and global standards. The commission produced an extensive report covering curriculum design, teaching methods, research priorities, student welfare, and the relationship between universities and society. Its recommendations shaped the foundation of modern Indian higher education, influencing the establishment of the University Grants Commission and several central universities. In contemporary contexts, the term UEC may also refer to internal academic evaluation centres within universities. UEC remains an important abbreviation in UGC NET, civil services, and state education examination syllabi where Indian education history is a frequent topic.
