Universal Design for Learning
Full Form of UDL
What is UDL?
Universal Design for Learning, commonly known as UDL, is an educational framework developed by the Centre for Applied Special Technology (CAST) that guides the design of flexible learning environments, curriculum, and assessments to accommodate the diverse needs of all learners. In India, UDL has gained significant traction following the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which strongly emphasises inclusive and equitable education for students with disabilities and different learning styles. The framework is built on three core principles: multiple means of engagement, multiple means of representation, and multiple means of action and expression. Schools, special education centres, and teacher training institutions across India are increasingly adopting UDL principles to create accessible classrooms, especially under the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016. UDL is widely referenced in Indian academic circles, particularly in courses on special education, educational psychology, and inclusive pedagogy taught in universities and B.Ed programmes. For competitive exams like UGC NET Education, CTET, and TET examinations, understanding UDL concepts is considered important for candidates appearing in pedagogy and inclusive education sections.
