Individualized Education Program
Full Form of IEP
What is IEP?
An Individualized Education Program (IEP) is a legally binding document developed for each child with a disability who requires special education services. In India, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 mandates that every child with a benchmark disability must have an IEP tailored to their unique learning needs. The IEP outlines specific academic and functional goals, the specialized instruction and supports to be provided, and how progress will be measured. It is created collaboratively by a team including parents, special educators, general teachers, and school administrators. The IEP is reviewed at least once a year and updated as the child grows. It ensures that students with disabilities receive a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment. The concept is central to inclusive education policies in Indian schools, especially under the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan. For competitive exams like CTET, KVS, and DSSSB, questions on IEP frequently appear in the child development and pedagogy sections. Understanding IEP helps educators, parents, and policymakers uphold the right to equal educational opportunities for all children.
