Understanding by Design
Full Form of UBD
What is UBD?
Understanding by Design (UBD) is a curriculum planning and instructional design framework that emphasises backward design, where teachers first identify the desired learning outcomes and acceptable evidence before planning classroom activities. Developed by American educators Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe, UBD has gained strong acceptance in Indian schools and teacher training circles, especially after the National Education Policy 2020 pushed for competency-based and outcome-oriented learning. The framework asks teachers to organise units around enduring understandings, essential questions, and authentic performance tasks rather than merely covering chapters from a textbook. Schools affiliated with CBSE, ICSE, and several state boards have begun applying UBD principles in their lesson plans, and NCERT along with various SCERTs include UBD modules in their in-service teacher training programmes. UBD regularly appears in competitive examinations such as CTET, UGC NET in Education, and KVS or NVS recruitment tests. By promoting deeper understanding over rote memorisation, UBD supports India's wider move towards experiential, holistic, and learner-centred education across primary, secondary, and higher secondary classrooms.
