What is TYR?
Tyrosine (abbreviated Tyr or TYR) is one of the twenty standard amino acids used by living cells to build proteins. It is classified as a non-essential amino acid, meaning the human body can synthesise it on its own from another amino acid called phenylalanine through a specific enzymatic process. Tyrosine plays a vital biochemical role in the production of several important neurotransmitters and hormones, including dopamine, adrenaline, noradrenaline, thyroid hormones, and melanin, which is the pigment responsible for skin and hair colour in humans. In India, tyrosine is widely discussed in biology, biochemistry, nutrition science, and medical curricula taught across central universities, IITs, AIIMS, and various NEET and JEE preparation courses. Indian pharmaceutical and supplement companies also manufacture tyrosine-based products marketed for cognitive enhancement and athletic performance, though clinical evidence supporting such benefits remains a subject of ongoing scientific research. Students preparing for competitive examinations such as NEET, AIIMS entrance tests, CSIR-NET life sciences, and state-level medical entrance exams frequently encounter questions related to amino acid structures, codon assignments, and metabolic pathways involving tyrosine.
