What is TWI?
Training Within Industry, commonly known by the acronym TWI, is a structured training methodology that originated in the United States during World War II to rapidly upskill workers in defence-related industries. It later spread across the globe and became highly relevant in India's manufacturing and industrial sector, particularly in automotive, pharmaceutical, and heavy engineering companies. The program consists of four core pillars known as the J-modules: Job Instructions, which teaches supervisors how to train workers effectively; Job Methods, which focuses on improving work processes; Job Relations, which deals with building positive supervisor-worker relationships; and Job Safety, which emphasizes workplace safety practices. In India, TWI is widely adopted by organizations participating in the Make in India initiative and is integral to skill development programs run by the National Skill Development Corporation. Several Indian automotive giants, including Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors, have implemented TWI to standardize training and improve productivity across their plants. The methodology is also referenced in examinations related to industrial engineering and human resource management courses offered by AICTE-approved institutions in India.
