Total Productive Maintenance
Full Form of TPM
What is TPM?
Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) is a comprehensive management philosophy that focuses on maintaining and improving the efficiency of production systems by involving every employee, from top management to shop floor workers. Originating in Japan through the Japan Institute of Plant Maintenance, TPM aims to eliminate breakdowns, defects, accidents, and waste across the entire organisation. In India, TPM is widely adopted by automobile giants like Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Hyundai, and various manufacturing units under the Indian government's productivity enhancement schemes. It is a key topic in mechanical engineering, operations management, and industrial engineering courses in IITs, NITs, and AICTE-affiliated colleges. The methodology emphasises preventive maintenance, autonomous maintenance by operators, and continuous improvement through small group activities. TPM is highly relevant for GATE, UPSC optional papers on management, and various state public service commission examinations where industrial management forms part of the syllabus.
