Television Rating
Full Form of TVR
What is TVR?
Television Rating, commonly abbreviated as TVR, is a metric used in India to measure the viewership of television programmes. It represents the percentage of a target audience watching a particular show at a specific time, calculated against the total television population or a defined demographic. In India, TVR data is collected and published by the Broadcast Audience Research Council (BARC) India, which took over from TAM Media Research in 2015. TVR is critical for broadcasters, advertisers, and media planners as it directly influences advertising rates, programming decisions, and channel positioning. Shows with higher TVRs command premium ad slots and greater revenue for networks. In India, TVRs are typically calculated for urban and rural markets separately, with Hindi general entertainment channels usually topping the charts in both categories. The metric gained additional prominence after the BARC system was suspended in October 2020 and later resumed with updated measurement guidelines. For students preparing for competitive exams, understanding TVR is useful in mass communication, journalism, and business management subjects. A typical good TVR for a prime-time Hindi general entertainment channel ranges between 2 and 4.
