Government Railway Police
Full Form of GRP
What is GRP?
The Government Railway Police (GRP) is a specialised police force responsible for maintaining law and order, safety, and security on Indian Railways. It operates under the state police departments and has jurisdiction over railway premises, including stations, trains, and yards. The GRP handles crimes such as theft, chain snatching, pickpocketing, and offenses against passengers, as well as ensuring crowd management during festivals and peak travel seasons. Unlike the Railway Protection Force (RPF), which primarily protects railway property, the GRP focuses on passenger safety and criminal investigations. Established under the Indian Railways Act, 1989, the GRP works closely with the RPF and local police to coordinate security operations. The force is deployed across all major railway stations and on long-distance trains, especially in high-risk zones. In competitive exams for government jobs such as SSC, Railway Recruitment Boards, and state police services, the role and powers of GRP are frequently tested, particularly in questions related to Indian security forces and railway administration. Aspirants are expected to understand the distinction between GRP and RPF, as well as their respective jurisdictions under the Code of Criminal Procedure.
