Taxe de Vente du Québec
Full Form of TVQ
What is TVQ?
Taxe de Vente du Québec, commonly abbreviated as TVQ, is a provincial sales tax levied by the Canadian province of Quebec on the sale, lease, or supply of most goods and services. It is administered alongside the federal Goods and Services Tax (GST) and applies to nearly all taxable supplies purchased or consumed within Quebec. The current TVQ rate stands at 9.975 percent, which when combined with the 5 percent federal GST results in a combined tax of approximately 14.975 percent on most purchases. For Indians, TVQ becomes relevant when engaging in cross-border trade with Quebec-based businesses, importing goods from Canada, pursuing higher education in the province, or working in finance and accounting roles at multinational companies with Quebec operations. Indian exporters and importers need to understand TVQ compliance to ensure accurate invoicing and avoid penalties during customs clearance. While TVQ is not part of any Indian competitive exam syllabus directly, students preparing for chartered accountancy, company secretary, customs, or foreign trade examinations may encounter references to international taxation frameworks, making familiarity with such terms beneficial. The acronym appears frequently on Canadian retail receipts, customs declarations, and tax filing documents.
