Total Sanitation Survey
Full Form of TSS
What is TSS?
The Total Sanitation Survey, commonly abbreviated as TSS, is a comprehensive nationwide assessment conducted by the Government of India to evaluate the progress and impact of sanitation programmes across rural and urban areas. It is primarily associated with the Swachh Bharat Mission and is carried out by independent agencies under the supervision of the Ministry of Jal Shakti. The survey collects data on toilet coverage, open defecation practices, solid and liquid waste management, and behavioural changes related to hygiene at the household, village, and district levels. TSS findings are widely used by state governments, district administrations, and policy researchers to identify gaps, allocate resources, and design targeted interventions for improving sanitation infrastructure. The survey results also play an important role in ranking districts and states under various cleanliness indices. For aspirants preparing for UPSC, SSC, and state public service examinations, understanding TSS is useful as questions on government sanitation initiatives frequently appear in general studies and current affairs sections.
