Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin
Full Form of TSI
What is TSI?
Thyroid Stimulating Immunoglobulin, commonly abbreviated as TSI, refers to a specific type of autoantibody produced by the immune system that mimics the action of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) and binds to TSH receptors on the thyroid gland. This abnormal stimulation causes the thyroid to produce excess hormones, leading to a condition known as Graves' disease, which is the most common cause of hyperthyroidism. In India, TSI testing is widely performed in metropolitan hospitals, diagnostic chains like Thyrocare and Metropolis, and government medical colleges to confirm autoimmune thyroid disorders. Doctors typically order this test when patients present with symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, rapid heartbeat, bulging eyes, goitre, and heat intolerance. The TSI blood test plays a crucial role in differentiating Graves' disease from other forms of hyperthyroidism. For medical and paramedical aspirants, understanding TSI is essential as questions on autoimmune thyroid disorders frequently appear in NEET PG, AIIMS, and various nursing entrance examinations across India.
