Tax Recovery Unit
Full Form of TRU
What is TRU?
The Tax Recovery Unit, commonly abbreviated as TRU, is a specialized division within the Income Tax Department of India responsible for the recovery of outstanding tax dues from assessees. It operates under the provisions of the Income Tax Act, 1961, particularly Chapter XVII and the Second Schedule, which deal with tax recovery procedures. TRUs are typically established at regional and zonal levels to handle cases where taxpayers have defaulted on their tax liabilities, including unpaid income tax, interest, penalties, and fines. The unit employs various recovery mechanisms such as issuing recovery notices, attaching bank accounts, attaching and selling movable and immovable properties, and in extreme cases, initiating prosecution. TRU plays a crucial role in strengthening India's direct tax compliance framework and ensuring that government revenue is collected efficiently. Banking aspirants, SSC candidates, and UPSC Civil Services examinees frequently encounter questions related to TRU and its functions in the Indian taxation system.
