Total Knee Arthroplasty
Full Form of TKA
What is TKA?
Total Knee Arthroplasty, commonly abbreviated as TKA, is a major orthopaedic surgical procedure in which a damaged or worn-out knee joint is replaced with an artificial prosthesis made of metal alloys, high-grade plastics, and medical-grade polymers. It is most often recommended for patients suffering from severe osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, or complex knee fractures that have not responded adequately to conservative treatments such as medication, physiotherapy, or steroid injections. In India, TKA has witnessed a remarkable rise over the past two decades due to an ageing population, increasing cases of obesity, growing awareness about joint health, and the availability of advanced implants at relatively affordable costs compared to Western nations. The procedure is performed across leading government hospitals, private super-speciality centres, and dedicated orthopaedic institutes in metropolitan cities as well as Tier-2 towns. Indian orthopaedic surgeons are recognised globally for their skill in knee replacement surgeries, and the country has emerged as a popular destination for medical tourism. TKA is a frequently tested topic in postgraduate medical entrance examinations such as NEET-SS, AIIMS, and PGI.
