Temporary Duty
Full Form of TDY
What is TDY?
Temporary Duty, commonly abbreviated as TDY, refers to a short-term assignment where service personnel are deployed to a location other than their permanent posting for a specific period. In India, the term is widely used within the Indian Armed Forces, including the Army, Navy, and Air Force, to describe officers, jawans, and other personnel who are temporarily relocated to perform operational, training, or administrative tasks. It is also used across various central government departments and public sector undertakings when employees are sent on short official tours. The duration of a TDY can range from a few days to several weeks, depending on the nature of the assignment, and personnel on TDY are entitled to specific travel allowances, daily allowances, and accommodation benefits as per service rules. The concept plays a vital role in maintaining operational readiness, facilitating inter-unit coordination, and ensuring that expertise is made available wherever required across the country. For candidates preparing for defence entrance examinations such as CDS, NDA, or AFCAT, understanding military terminology like TDY is useful for the general knowledge and interview rounds.
