Thrombocytopenia
Full Form of TCT
What is TCT?
Thrombocytopenia refers to a medical condition in which a person has an abnormally low count of platelets, the blood cells responsible for clotting. A normal platelet count ranges between 150,000 and 450,000 per microlitre of blood, and a drop below this range can lead to easy bruising, prolonged bleeding, and in severe cases, life-threatening internal haemorrhage. In India, thrombocytopenia is most commonly associated with viral infections such as dengue fever, which sees massive outbreaks every monsoon season across urban and semi-urban areas. Other causes include nutritional deficiencies, certain medications, autoimmune disorders, liver disease, and bone marrow conditions. The diagnosis is typically made through a complete blood count test, and treatment depends on identifying and addressing the underlying cause. Mild cases may require only monitoring, while severe cases might need platelet transfusions, corticosteroids, or other targeted therapies. The term is extensively used by doctors, pathologists, and haematologists in clinical practice and is an important concept for students preparing for medical entrance examinations like NEET PG, where understanding the causes, symptoms, and management of low platelet counts is frequently tested.
