Standard Zero Balance
Full Form of SZB
What is SZB?
Standard Zero Balance (SZB) is a type of bank account offered in India that does not require account holders to maintain a stipulated minimum average monthly balance. These accounts are specifically designed to make banking accessible to first-time users, students, daily wage earners, and individuals from lower-income groups who may find it difficult to maintain the minimum balance required by regular savings accounts. In India, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) popularised the concept through its guidelines on Basic Savings Bank Deposit Accounts (BSBDA), which mandates banks to offer zero balance accounts with essential banking facilities. Major banks such as State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, Bank of Baroda, HDFC Bank, and ICICI Bank offer SZB-style accounts featuring a free ATM-cum-debit card, passbook facility, and a limited number of free monthly transactions. While these accounts offer convenience, they also carry certain restrictions on cash withdrawals per transaction and may have slightly lower interest rates than regular savings accounts. SZB accounts have been instrumental in advancing financial inclusion in India. The concept is relevant for candidates preparing for banking examinations conducted by IBPS, SBI, and RBI, where questions on types of accounts and banking products frequently appear in the general awareness section.
