Smart Water Supply (SWS) refers to the integration of digital technology and automation into traditional water distribution networks to enhance efficiency, reduce losses, and ensure equitable water delivery to households. In India, SWS systems form a critical component of flagship government programmes such as the Smart Cities Mission, AMRUT, and Jal Jeevan Mission, where they are deployed in urban municipalities and rural districts to monitor real-time water flow, detect leaks, track consumption, and manage pressure across pipelines. The technology typically involves IoT-enabled sensors, SCADA systems, smart meters, and centralised dashboards that allow civic authorities to remotely supervise water treatment plants and distribution lines. Cities like Pune, Coimbatore, Surat, and Visakhapatnam have already adopted SWS frameworks to address perennial issues of water scarcity, theft, and contamination.
