Substance Use Disorder
Full Form of SUD
What is SUD?
SUD, or Substance Use Disorder, is a clinical term used by medical professionals to describe a pattern of harmful or compulsive use of substances such as alcohol, tobacco, opioids, cannabis, or prescription drugs. It is formally recognised in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) published by the American Psychiatric Association, and classified under the broader category of mental and behavioural disorders by the World Health Organization. In India, the term has gained significant traction over the past decade as the country grapples with rising cases of alcohol dependence, opioid abuse, and pharmaceutical misuse, particularly in states like Punjab, Manipur, and Uttar Pradesh. The National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences in Bengaluru and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences frequently use the term in research publications, public health campaigns, and clinical training programmes. Indian psychiatric and de-addiction centres also use SUD to standardise diagnosis and treatment planning. The concept is important for students preparing for medical, nursing, and psychology entrance exams in India, where questions on classification of mental disorders regularly appear.
