Special Needs Education
Full Form of SNE
What is SNE?
Special Needs Education (SNE) refers to the educational practice of designing and delivering customised learning experiences for students with physical, intellectual, sensory, learning, or developmental disabilities. In India, this field has gained significant momentum following the enactment of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, which mandates inclusive education in all mainstream schools receiving government funding. The National Education Policy 2020 further strengthened the framework by emphasising equitable access and individualised support for children with diverse learning needs across primary, secondary, and higher education levels. SNE professionals, often called special educators, work in special schools, inclusive classrooms, rehabilitation centres, NGOs, and government programmes run by state education departments across the country. They are trained to use assistive technologies, sign language, braille systems, and behaviour modification techniques suited to each child's requirements. In India, organisations like the Rehabilitation Council of India regulate the training and certification standards, while Samagra Shiksha funds inclusive education initiatives. Aspirants preparing for UGC NET, CTET, or state teacher eligibility tests frequently encounter SNE as a critical topic under inclusive education sections.
